What is the International Baccalareate

The International Baccalaureate was founded in 1968 in Geneva, Switzerland and currently exists in over 3,500 schools in 148 countries to develop and offer challenging programs.  Hansberry College Prep is an IB World School offering the Diploma Programme.  These are schools that share a common philosophy - a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Hansberry College Prep believes is important for our students.  The International Baccalaureate provides a rigorous education for highly motivated and academically proficient students in grades 11 and 12.

The Pre-Diploma Programme prepares 9th and 10th grade students for the IB through pre-requisite courses.  The Diploma Programme (DP) consists of a full schedule of IB courses for 11th and 12th grade students in the following areas:
  • English
  • World Language (Spanish)
  • Experimental Sciences (Biology)
  • Mathematics (Pre-Calculus/Calculus/Advanced Statistics)
  • History
  • Fine Arts (Dance)
Students are also required to fulfill the following:
  • The extended essay asks students to engage in independent research (4,000 words) through an in-depth study of a question relating to one of the DP subjects they are studying.
  • Theory of Knowledge is a critical thinking course that develops a coherent approach to learning that unifies the academic disciplines.
  • Creativity, Action, Service (CAS)
               -Creativity encourages students to engage in the arts and creative thinking.
               -Action seeks to develop a healthy lifestyle through physical activity.
               -Service with the community offers a vehicle for a new learning with academic
 
The Diploma Programme is flexible and students are not required to obtain a certain test score to participate.  If parents believe that a student is ready, he/she can enroll, provided he/she remains enrolled for at least one semester.
